June 20, 2011

Dear Reader,

Gone Fishing!

This is an abbreviated Monday Report as I will be in Idaho part of this week attending a Board Meeting and hopefully getting in a little trout fishing on the Firehole in Yellowstone and the Henry's Fork in Idaho.

Economic Notes:

Global Business Confidence

Business confidence fell meaningfully last week from the very high readings the week before. The Memorial Day holiday in the U.S. resulted in fewer responses to the survey and is behind the week-to-week volatility. Abstracting from the volatility, sentiment has weakened since the spring, particularly in the U.S., but continues to hold up reasonably well. Most of the falloff has been in response to the broad questions regarding the economy's current performance and outlook six months from now. Most encouraging is that hiring intentions are more sturdy that the official employment data. Sentiment remains consistent with a global economy that is expanding at a pace that is above its potential growth rate.

Global Manpower Employment Outlook Survey: +12%
The global labor market has improved over the past year, but the outlook is mixed for the third quarter. Hiring intentions have not improved in the U.S. but have strengthened in Canada, China, France, Germany, New Zealand and the U.K. Among other large economies, employment outlooks deteriorated in Australia, Japan and India. Fiscally troubled economies such as Spain, Ireland and Italy remain reluctant to hire additional staff. Above all, more hiring needs to take place in the U.S. and Europe for the global recovery to evolve into a self-sustaining expansion

OECD Composite Leading Indicators: 103.0
The OECD composite leading indicator held steady at 103 in April. The CLIs suggest the U.S. and Germany will remain important drivers of global growth in 2011. Notably, however, the CLIs for the euro zone as a whole, the big five Asian economies, and the BRIC countries suggest growth momentum is slowing. Indeed, the global economy faces a number of downside risks in 2011, which could undermine the Moody's Analytics forecast for global growth of 3.4%.

Business Inventories (MTIS): +0.8%
Total business inventories increased by 0.8% in April, closely aligned with expectations. The increase was primarily driven by gains at the manufacturer and wholesale levels, as retailer inventory growth was scant. Nevertheless, this gain is noticeably slower than that achieved in March even with the positive contribution from petroleum-related products.

Producer Price Index: +0.2%
Prices for finished goods rose 0.2% in May, posting the slowest pace since last summer. The monthly increase was tempered by a slowdown in fuel prices and a deceleration in finished food prices. Excluding food and energy, core prices for finished goods rose by 0.2% in May. Prices for core intermediate goods rose while core crude goods were lower last month, as commodity prices retreated. However, steady core prices of finished goods indicate momentum in the recovery. Moreover, faster price inflation at intermediate stages of production is beginning to put modest upward pressure on the core index, a trend that will continue in the months ahead.

Retail Sales : -0.2%
Retail sales fell 0.2% in May, the first decline since June; consumers are contributing to the pause in economic growth currently under way. Falling auto sales drove the decline. Excluding autos, sales grew 0.3%, the slowest growth since July. Weakness in spending was broad based as sales also fell at electronics and appliances stores, furniture stores, grocery stores, and general merchandise stores. Strong growth was hard to find, with nonstore retailers and building supply stores leading growth. Adding to the weakness, growth in March and April was revised lower.

Chain Store Sales Snapshot: -0.8%
The ICSC chain store sales index fell by 0.8% in the latest week, fully reversing the gains of the prior two weeks. However, sales fell a similar amount in the comparable week last year so year-over-year growth slipped only slightly, to 2.4%. Nonetheless, this is the weakest growth since the end of January. The ICSC indicated that discounters fared particularly poorly during the week.

CO: Hickenlooper Signs Bill to Merge Parks, Wildlife [Durango Herald]: The merger of Colorado's divisions of Wildlife and State Parks is a done deal, thanks to Gov. John Hickenlooper's approval. Hickenlooper signed Senate Bill 208 at Sylvan Lake State Park near Eagle. It's his highest-profile achievement in his pledge to make government more efficient. The legislative work is over, but now managers at the two agencies will have to combine them over the next several months. The new joint board that will oversee the Division of Parks and Wildlife will meet Friday in Grand Junction to interview three finalists to lead the new agency. The interviews will take place behind closed doors
